WE REMEMBER THOSE WHO WERE

KILLED IN ACTION

HMS E20

5th November 1915

HMS E.20 was one of 57 submarines of the "E" class

A clandestine gathering had been ordered for the 5th November 1915 between the British Submarine E20 under the command of Lt-Cdr Clyfford Warren and the French Submarine Q49 (Turquoise) under the command of Leon Ravenel. However on the 30th of October the French vessel ran aground near Nagara Point, in the Dardanelles, coming under fire from Turkish shore batteries the French crew hastily abandoned their submarine. Captain Ravenel had been unable to signal the imminent danger of his submarine, and failed to destroy his confidential orders and codes. Seizing on the opportunity the German submarine UB-14 under the command of Heino von Heimburg was dispatched to the known rendezvous with the British submarine. Using the captured codes UB-14 was able to approach the unsuspecting British sub on the surface, at a distance of 500 metres Heino von Heimburg fired. The E20’s crew who had been watching the approaching submarine had been caught totally of guard and were powerless to react. The torpedo hit E20’s conning tower and sank the submarine with the loss of 21 men. UB-14 rescued nine men, including E20’s captain who, reportedly, had been brushing his teeth at the time of the attack. The French Submarine Q49 (Turquoise) was re-floated and repaired by Turkish forces and renamed Mustadieh Ombashi but was never commissioned. The vessel was returned to the French in 1919 and was scrapped in November 1919
