THE ROAD TO WAR

TIME LINE

Franco-German War 1870-1871

On 16 July 1870, the French parliament voted to declare war on the German Kingdom of Prussia. After a series of humiliating defeats this culminated in Frances surrender and the signing of the Armistice at Versailles on the 28 January 1871. The Prussian Army, under the terms of the armistice, held a brief victory parade in Paris on 17 February and allowed train loads of food into Paris, a full withdrawal only took place when France agreed to pay a 5,000 million franc war indemnity.

The Treaty of Frankfurt of 10 May 1871 gave Germany most of Alsace and some parts of Lorraine, which became the Imperial territory of Alsace-Lorraine.

The newly created German Empire has established itself as the main power in continental Europe with the most powerful and professional army in the world. Although Great Britain remained the dominant world power, British involvement in European affairs during the late 19th century was very limited..
